Reason-d’être

Contemporary Advantage of Nations in
contemporary times shall be,
to revive entrepreneurial spirit
& innovation (new to the world ideas)
for social & industry benefits
through curriculum & environment
suited to 21st century educational needs

In the last few decades what ‘Community Science Centers’ did for Science and Scientific temperament; changing world order and the resulting expectations from education, has brought forth pressing demand for 21st century traits - time has come for “New Age Education” - holistic development of a child (both design & scientific temperament)

The thought for ‘i297 Learning Lab & Workshop’ is an organic progression of insights and experiences gained since its inception in 2009 through,

  1. In school Subjects (Design 4 School, Innovation 4 School & Digital Media 4 School)
  2. Workshops (Knowledge Management 4 School, Design Driven Innovation for Engineering & Management and above mentioned subjects)

The benefits of the 3 major sections of I297

A glance at the programs

  • Subjects (New Age Education) (Duration : 1 year to 8 years)
  • Long term developmental programs (Duration : 2 years to 8 years)
  • Workshops (Duration : 1 day to 3 weeks)
  • Modular programs (Duration : 1 month to 3 months)
  • Local, regional, national, international learning trips (Duration : 1 day to 14 days)

I297 has the following workshops round the year

  • Innovations of the century/decade
  • Technology exploration
Working with tools and techniques will help children becoming apt at handling various real life situations that require specific hands-on skills. Working with craftsman will give them real time experience of how things are done in the creative and manufacturing industry.
Understand existing and emerging technology. Children are encouraged to develop a link with self through reflection and understanding towards others (peers, family, and society) and to the environment (nature, markets, etc).

3. Inspire and nurture excellence: i297 shall provide an environment that enriches and nurtures creativity, design, innovation, pursuit of excellence through range of structured activities. Self learning as well as focused mentorship are the two pillars of the culture at i297 – treating the young as a functional part of the society and not just a biological part of the society. The below poem epitomizes our thoughts,

“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee Into ever-widening thought and action Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake”
- Rabindranath Tagore

I297 thrives on culture of nurturing and inspiring excellence, thorough mentoring
It focus on various parameters, when children come to i297 they are present to the purpose of why they have come and why are they doing what they choose to do. They are a community of purpose. This means design has a purpose. Whatever they are given, they have to create something (e.g. coming up with a prototype as an end result). When we talk of fluid networking, we mean children from across the world would think of who are the people who they would be in communication and who all are important for them in their work.

i297 presents a soup where ideas permeate and clash.
We engage that when children come to the Lab they share their ideas. A note must be taken that everybody’s ideas are considered. They can write down their ideas, such that whenever they look back can read and refer those ideas.

Children have freedom to the 3Es; Explore, Experiment and Express.
Explore is the 1st stage where children develop an understanding towards self, others and environment conducting, research work, understanding, documenting.
Experiment is the stage where children are involved in ideating, analyzing, synthesizing, filtering, choosing, prototyping.
Express stage allows them to present their work through thematic exhibitions and making installations. Learning is fun, i.e. learning is fun that makes the learning playful; with each year having a rise in the level of difficulty that makes it challenging.

They share and empower each other through crosspollination and observation with a sense of purpose at the core cultivating a habit for problem solving and originality.

Workshops & Do It Yourself Kits

Range of workshops are available at i297 zone at Ahmedabad, as well as, remote locations i.e. schools, colleges, corporate. These workshops range from ½ day to twelve ½ days / 6 full days workshops. These workshops are generally held over weekends / 3 consecutive days.
Some of the popular workshops are,

For K 12 Students Workshops

Philanthropic Workshops

Engineering Students and Faculty members Workshop

10+ workshops conducted for Faculty members and students from across the state of Gujarat, INDIA. The workshops aimed at sensitizing faculty members towards design and innovation. The workshop for students were aimed at helping them develop a framework for Engineering Academic Projects for Gujarat Technological University

The above framework was finalized by the team after an exhaustive session of debates, discussion and presentations of various groups of faculty.

Reflections on framework

We need to develop our unique model suited to discipline, student aptitude & passion, resources available, expected outcome,

  1. Initiator (Self – other – environment)
  2. Steps (Depending upon the kind of project)
  3. Layers within Steps (sub points & uniqueness)
  4. Horizontal breadth (Holistic – Multidisciplinary)
  5. Sequence (Emphasis upon which step)
  6. Different models for different context (cost etc.)

The focus was on how to make students PROACTIVE from being REACTIVE

  1. Moving from INDIVIDUAL SOURCING to  SHARING and NETWORKING for, expansion and enrichment (5 students doing different project interact with each other throughout the process) (Building one’s own web inside and outside for all steps)
  2. The Innovation Value Chain (I do everything v/s understanding that I & others too have a part to play in the whole chain)
  3. Concept of Design & Launch : Concept of Redesign & Re launch

The First stage of Sourcing of Problems/Ideas/Research was explained and discussed.
Faculty members could relate to their specific needs and based on the proposed stage, could come up with 3 examples each upon of the methods: Self – Others – Environment.
This exercise lead to on the spot generation of ideas for projects related to different disciplines.

How can memory be used as a tool for idea generation.

Various tools, techniques and methods of using imagination for idea generation. Few exercises were carried out, such as, SCAMPER, for the faculty members to generate Project Ideas.

Brief discussion took place upon how to select a problem.

The workshops could achieve,

  1. Feed back as well as sharing of views upon the Framework directly indicates that the faculty could understand and apply the various processes, tools & techniques proposed.
  2. Though not a part of the workshop, however, Some 20+ faculty members committed towards directly applying proposed tools & techniques with their students.
  3. All faculty members engaged in mini projects & exercises during the workshops.
  4. The FX team could get a first hand ground realities and practices followed and thus could create the Framework
  5. FX team could also develop first 2 stages of the Framework i.e. Project Idea/problem Scouting (search) and Project idea/problem filtering.
  6. FX team could also develop an implementation framework for academic projects.

Some of the faculty members pledged to conduct the following activities in their respective disciplines,

  1. Field Trip for holistic learning
  2. Idea scouting through user problems from real world (their surrounding)
  3. Taking students to industry to interact with manufacturing workers to identify their problems and then take these as project problems
  4. Giving more time to students during the projects and adopting a mentoring philosophy over teaching philosophy
  5. Sharing personal industry contacts with students and helping them connect with the local industries where faculty had acquaintances.
