The reason d’être for Futurz Xplored (Fx)

“We can’t solve problems
by using the same kind of thinking we used
when we created them.” -albert einstein

Children our future and of the world, are most important to us and we treasure them.
All of us together-parents, schools, society invest in them,
to prepare them for the future; a future of continuous growth and change, of challenges and competition, but also of potential and promise.
Together we must enable and empower them to become productive, be sensitive, succeed individually, contribute socially, perform globally & develop and sustain values.

Education has always been the stepping stone to address the changing world. World has long recognized the role that education plays in the thriving of and sustaining of nature, culture, economies, - individuals and nations. Education needs to move to a more Proactive Approach wherein learning makes students deal with real life situations, get meaningfully engaged in what they like and eventually choose a profession as per their understanding of self & of their liking.

Glimpse of the global and local scenario,

Global scenario highlights new challenges: From the media explosion, pace of technological development, the ever morphing socio-cultural and socio-economic scenarios to the changing value and ethics paradigms & ever increasing competition.

The growing disconnect between education & real life, & profession & current needs. The constant need to differentiate and add value all the time, places many more situational, local and global demands upon our young.

Change is the only constant; however, change in this century has been intense. It’s become faster - more impactful and has reached the level of common man. This has seen the rise of ‘wicked’ problems that seem unmanageable.

  • Pollution
  • Depleting natural resources
  • Increasing pace
  • Present Worries, Future insecurity
  • Rapid urbanization
  • Nucleus family, staying on your own
  • Work – life imbalance
  • Poverty
  • Unemployment
  • Unemployability
  • Conflicts
  • Stress-tension
  • Addictions
  • Eroding Ethics-Values
  • Self over others
  • Terrorism -Wars

Industry

Scale, Scope and Speed at which Industries work in the 21st century has increased multifold. Global reach and presence has become a common thing. What used to happen over a decade is now expected in 2 to 3 years.

This puts enormous pressure on an individual to perform at peak levels and that too constantly. The demands are so high that it calls for newer sets of skill-thinking-attitude to not just grow but even to survive in such climate.

Simultaneously it is also a fact that in the contemporary world an individual changes one's job a minimum 10 times in their profession career, and, more challenging is a fact that an individual now changes ones profession a minimum 3 times in their life span.

If this is a fact, then one is left to wonder – what skill, thinking and attitude should we encourage and nurture when the skills apt for one profession or a job are going to be given up for a new profession or job!.

Education

Education has always been a change agent, however, over the turn of the century education has become one of the hottest topics of discussions – be it nations, societies, individuals – education is being looked upon to make individual’s life easier and more enriching. A lot of initiatives in education space have contributed to the development of necessary and contemporary infrastructure, enhancement in teaching-learning aid, technology has facilitated improvements in the quality of educational content and its delivery, teacher training programs for more effective and efficient teachers, a range of project based learning environments to make education more meaningful to the changing times.

However, extensive study at Futurz Xplored spanning over the last decade has thrown up interesting point of views. Whereas industry-society-individual are all experiencing tremendous change due to the changed requirement of skill-thinking-attitude in tune to the 21st century requirements – yet, there has hardly been any intervention in education towards addressing this specific aspect.

A look at professional education throws up challenges and resulting diseases of the modern era, such as, Unemployment, Unemployability, Outdated syllabus of professional courses, theoretical knowledge based approach, Lack of expected economic rewards to selected profession, Social pressure, Changing Job roles and thus mismatch of education to profession.

Root cause

Whereas the world has progressed from,

Yet, a lot of things we do today and the systems that we are surrounded with are still stuck in the industrial or information era. This lack of shift in certain sectors has compounded the confusion and uncertainty of each individual.

Each era brought with it a set of necessitating skills-thinking-attitude. Just as the 18th century needed farmers, 19th century factory workers, 20th century knowledge workers; the need of the 21st century are creators, entrepreneurs and leaders.

Resulting Impact on our children are,

  • Over Burdened child
  • Too little time to pursue what one likes
  • A culture of negative competition
  • Fear based education
  • Mindset of how can I study less to get more
  • Rigid mindset develops
  • Conceptually weak
  • Lack of clarity & purpose
  • Experimentation missing
  • Tunnel vision
  • Questioning ability is killed - conformist
  • Joy of learning & celebrating education is lost

On Children

Kahlil Gibran
“Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.”
